ABIGAIL - DAY ONE

Scripture Reading:  I Samuel 25:1-42

Abigail's name means  "My father is joy"

Abigail was a peacemaker. She used her wisdom to save many lives.

Her father had given her away in marriage to Nabal, a foolish and arrogant rich man.  He thought that she would be well cared for.  Nabal's flocks prospered when David moved to that region to hide from Saul.  When David sent 10 men to ask Nabal for provisions, he laughed in his face.  He foolishly refused and insulted David.  When hearing Nabal's answer, David was angry.  Nabal's servants found Abigail and told her of the refusal, knowing that it put all of their household and camp in danger. They begged her to prevent this from happening.  She immediately went into action.  She packed up donkeys with many gifts for David, including 200 loaves of bread, five dressed sheep (ready for the fire), 100 cakes of raisins, 200 cases of pressed figs, and a bushel of roasted grain.  This would provide a great and convenient feast for David and his men.  When she saw him she fell to the ground at his feet.  She told him to blame her and not that fool Nabal.  She asked his forgiveness and told him that the Lord would grant him a long reign, that he would be protected by God, and his enemies slain.  He chose to bless her and thank her for keeping him from taking vengeance into his own hands.  She kept him from sinning and reminding him that only the Lord may take vengeance.  Upon her return she found Nabal drunk at a festival banquet, attempting to act like a King.  When he heard of her adventures his heart failed.  He died 10 days later.

Now for the second part of her life.  When David heard that Nabal had died, he asked Abigail to marry him.  She was pleased to make her own choice and become his third wife.  They had a son, Kileab.  Her act of wisdom had been that of a dutiful wife.  Life with Nabal could not have been easy, but she made the best of it.  She took a bad situation and turned it into good for others.

Tomorrow...........what can we learn from Abigail to apply to our life today???
